Pro Shop Sale.pdf
Hole 1 – Baljaffray – 366 yards Par 4
Straightforward start, hole turns right to left uphill to green cut into hillside, beware this can be the quickest green on the course if coming back to front. Hug left hand side of fairway to give short iron approach.
Hole 2 – Orr’s Rest – 163 yards Par 3
Slightly downhill par 3 playing onto a split level green guarded by three bunkers at front. Playing onto wrong level will leave a very tricky putt.
Hole 3 – Elbow – 420 yards Par 4
Slightly left to right dogleg playing downhill back to clubhouse, a good tee shot will get you to bottom of the hill leaving a short iron approach to a green protected by humps and hollows. Take your line off the tee on the dormer windows of the clubhouse.
Hole 4 – Westward Ho – 360 yards Par 4
Playing into the prevailing west wind beware the fairway bunker on right hand side of fairway at 220 yards from tee, short to mid iron approach between the 2 bunkers protecting the flattest green on the course. Burn meanders up left hand side and is to be avoided at all costs.
Hole 5 – Whins – 379 yards Par 4
A good tee shot is required to get you beyond the severe left to right sloping fairway, after that a short iron approach downhill to a split level sloping green from front to back. With the prevailing wind at your back and hard running green, a traditional Scottish Pitch and Run is sometimes the clever shot in summer.
Hole 6 – Hog’s Back – 410 yards Par 4
The hole is played uphill and is a three shotter for the majority of players, at top of hill the fairway levels out onto a ‘Hogs back’ where the ball will be kicked left or right if you have not hit centre, down onto a green with sloping edges on three sides which will leave a difficult pitch if missed. A five is not to be sneered at here.
Hole 7 – Port Lucy – 192 yards Par 3
Arguably Windyhill’s best hole, a long iron or fairway wood (sometimes driver) played to a small well guarded green with bunkers on both sides together with burn and out of bounds running up the length of the left hand side, on the right hand side the rock outcrop hangs menacingly to catch anything wayward there. Par may feel like birdie here.
Hole 8 – Road – 463 yards Par 5
If your score is still intact after the previous two holes, here you have a genuine birdie opportunity, the hole is a right to left dogleg and a well struck drive over the marker pole will leave a mid to short iron approach to set up your birdie or even eagle. Beautiful designed hole with a colourful splash of blooming flowers and Azaleas on the left hand side and behind the green. Beware though the green is one of the trickiest on the course and will catch out unsuspecting golfers.
Hole 9 – Perfection – 414 yards Par 4
As the name suggests perfection is required here to gain your par, the majority of players will play it as a three shot hole, hole is played straight up the hill to a green sitting some 100 feet above the tee, on left hand side of green is the largest of the ‘craters’ which should be avoided. Flat green will allow those who play it as a 3 shot hole good opportunity to hole for par otherwise five is no bad score here.
Hole 10 – Craters – 181 yards Par 3
After your introduction of the ‘craters’ at the previous hole, you will now be fully introduced here. A fabulous par 3 playing slightly downhill to a green guarded on right by two bunkers and on left and rear by severely sloping edges into the ‘craters’, playing into the prevailing wind hole will play as a long iron or fairway wood to some, as the previous short hole a par can feel like a birdie here at times.
Hole 11 – Nest – 296 yards Par 4
A respite, a fairly straightforward hole up a gentle slope to a bunkerless green, beware though this green has teeth and has some of the severest slopes on the course, a relatively easy par though and good birdie opportunity.
Hole 12 – Rocky Gait – 433 yard Par 4
Now you’'ve enjoyed your respite on the previous hole you now have Windyhill’s severest test lying ahead of you, a hole set on three levels bordered by rocky outcrops on left and heather on the right, this hole should be played in the natural stages as set out in front of you, a five here is accepted by golfers of all levels.
Hole 13 – Switchback – 493 yards Par 5
Rocky outcrop along left had side of tee shot with heather banking should be avoided here,a bunker is placed on right had side of fairway short of green to catch second shots. A three shot hole for most players but for longer hitters a great birdie and possible eagle opportunity. Again a well designed hole and if the obvious dangers can be avoided, relatively straightforward.
Hole 14 – De’ils Crag – 152 yards – Par 3
Windyhill’s signature hole, a delightful short hole set in between rocky outcrop on right and burn & out of bounds on left with the imposing De'’ils Crag overlooking the green. In the springtime the Azalia’s are in full bloom showing the hole off in full, all in all a wonderful little hole for all golfers.
Hole 15 – Muir – 472 yards – Par 5
A straightforward hole where it has a more heathland feel to it compared to the rest of the course, views over the Campsie Hills and Dumgoyne to the North making for a dramatic backdrop to this hole.
Hole 16 – Happy Valley – 378 yards – Par 4
Imposing tee shot through the narrow corridor of pines down into the valley below before a short iron back up the other side to a green perched in top, a hidden bunker runs the full width of this green at the rear to catch anything long. From the tee and green stunning views are had over the entire City of Glasgow.
Hole 17 – Cottage – 286 yard – Par 4
Short downhill hole and one of the best birdie opportunities on the course, green is guarded on left hand side by bunker and out of bounds from the cottage gardens imposes towards the green, longer hitters will have a go to drive this green and a possible eagle opportunity.
Hole 18 – Home – 309 yard – Par 4
Although a relatively short finishing hole it is by far a push over. Out of bounds runs the entire left hand side of hole, on the right is areas of thick pines and if you manage to avoid these the hardest and trickiest green on the course awaits, the green has numerous levels, humps & hollows and it would take the most generous of golfers to give any putt here.
The Windyhill Course
When legendary course designer, James Braid laid out Windyhill in 1924, he described the course as being a "severe test of golf" measuring over 6,000 yards. In more recent times, the course has been described as the "..best golf course in the Glasgow Area." by none other than the famous Scottish Professional and Golf Coach, Bob Torrance. A man well qualified to make that claim.
Over the years, we have had many a famous member and also boast a Scottish Amateur Champion in Andrew McArthur ,who won it in 2002. Possibly better known is Janice Moodie. A multi-tournament winner on the USPLGA tour, Janice has also represented her country in both the Curtis Cup and the Solheim Trophy.

NEWS ! NEWS ! NEWS !
RUTH McINTYRE
Some of you will not have heard of Ruth's recent unfortunate accident. Ruth was preparing wood logs for her wood-burning stove when she came off second best with the wood cutting machine. I won't go into the details, needless to say she's up and about and getting on with things. Can't keep a good girl down !!
All our wishes go to Ruth and Claire at this time.
SPORTSMAN'S DINNER & PRIZEGIVING NIGHT
Our annual prizegiving night was a fantastic success with Guest Speaker Campbell Elliot regaling us with side-splitting stories of his time as a Pro golfer as well as his time growing up in Clydebank. The night was also memorable for the award of an Honorary Membership to Windyhill's own Robert Collinson. The Committee felt that Bob, and indeed the whole Collinson Family, had been worthy ambassadors of the Club and the award was our way of a belated 'Thank You' to the Collinson Clan, past and present. (You should have seen his face !)
YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU
We're still looking for volunteers to carry out various tasks throughout the club in order to keep the costs down. So what are you waiting for - step up and make yersel' known to the House Committee, Captain or Vice Captain.
CHASE THE JOKER
You'll no doubt be aware that the joker was won by Big Andy Falconer. Yes, our very own jammy big Bar Steward finally won the top prize of £1700 ! Well, considering he bought about £500 worth of tickets, he was bound to win it ! (You've got to be in it to win it !)
A new Joker is in full swing with a prize of £450 already in place. In addition to the usual £20 prize for being drawn out, there will be additional prizes of £50 if you draw an Ace.
So, dig deep and get your tickets for this VERY popular game !
WINDYHILL LOTTERY
Below you'll see a link to the Windyhill Lottery Bank Mandate Form that will enable you to invest in the future of the Club. For just £10 a month, your money goes into a fund to improve the Club. All participants are entered into a monthly draw that pays out generous prizes. The fund raised by this fantastic enterprise has already bought many things for the Club including the Clubhouse carpet !
