FOUNDING OF THE CLUB

On Thursday 11th June 1908 a public meeting was held in Maryhill Burgh Hall, Glasgow for those who were interested in forming a golf club in the north west of the city of Glasgow. There was an enthusiastic response and a committee led by James White was set up to find suitable land for a course.

The Committee identified a promising area of land on the Garscube Estate at Canniesburn Toll owned by Sir Archibald Campbell. After several visits to the estate and in consultation with the golf professional, David Adams, negotiations were started with the Factor, and provisional terms were agreed for a fourteen to twenty one year lease on 76.5 acres of land at Canniesburn Toll at an annual rent of £195, to be approved by the members.

The search for suitable ground and the protracted rental negotiations meant that it was the middle of October before the second meeting was held. Seventy-three gentlemen attended this meeting, again at Maryhill Burgh Hall. The choice of site and the terms of the lease were approved, as were entrance fees and annual subscriptions, which were fixed to cover the expenses of the club for the first year

The first one hundred applicants were to be offered membership for an entrance fee of one guinea and an annual subscription of one pound five shillings. The next two hundred would have to pay an entrance fee of two guineas.

No ladies or juniors were to be admitted until the course became playable.

At this point, a motion was proposed by the Chairman, Mr. James White that the meeting constitutes itself into the Canniesburn Golf Club.

A management committee of eighteen members was selected, James White being elected the first Club Captain. Having been delayed for so long, the new Committee swung into action. Sir Archibald Campbell was invited to be the Honorary President, Robert Balfour M.P. and Baillie McInnes Shaw, Honorary Vice-Presidents.
