The course, designed by James Braid, extended to six thousand yards and would be “a severe test of golf”.
A start had been made in the laying out of the course and by the time the letter was sent out, the first four holes were well underway. It was hoped that all eighteen holes would be ready by the summer 2004, weather permitting. Weather obviously did not permit because the course was not completed until January 1925 and even then the greens were temporarily closed until the spring for protection.
The clubhouse took even longer to complete and did not open until June 1925.
The holes were all named by the Greens Committee although there is no explanation for the choices.
In the past 25 years, thousands of fir trees have been planted to give shelter from the winds, which are often prevalent at Windyhill, and much has been done to improve drainage to produce the Course that you play today.
